Soil Amendments

A soil amendment is any material added to a soil to improve its physical properties, such as water retention, permeability, water infiltration, drainage, aeration and structure. The goal is to provide a better environment for roots.

A-1 LifelikeTM 3/8" Compost

A-1 Lifelike 3/8” Compost is a blend of horse bedding shavings and manure. This blend is then composted under strict standards of Title 14 of the California Integrated Waste Management Regulations. Our compost has been through pathogen reduction by composting at temperatures above 132 degrees Fahrenheit for up to six months with frequent turning. Our compost is shipped to a third party laboratory to ensure our product is below heavy metal and pathogen limits established by the CIWMB Title 14. It is a long-lasting organic material, dark in color, which adds necessary humus and beneficial microbes to our native soils.

A-1 LifelikeTM 1/8" Humus

A-1 Lifelike 1/8” Humus is the finely composted particles screened out of our A-1 Lifelike 3/8” Compost. The finer particle distribution make this an excellent choice for seed topper or as a component of turf topdressing mixes.

Plain Redwood Shavings

Plain Redwood Shavings are untreated shavings derived from the surfacing of lumber at sawmills. The shavings are approximately 3/4” with some sawdust. Plain Redwood Shavings, when incorporated into soil, improves soil structure, tilth, increases nutrient holding capacity of sandy soils, and improves water drainage. Plain Redwood Shavings also have a slower decomposition rate than shavings derived from soft woods such as Fir or Pine. Soil microorganisms require nitrogen to break down woody material. To prevent a nitrogen depletion from the soil during the decomposition of the wood products, a nitrogen fertilizer should be applied.

Nitrolized Redwood Shavings

Nitrolized Redwood Shavings are shavings derived from the surfacing of lumber at sawmills treated with an ammonium nitrate fertilizer to prevent the nitrogen draw from the soil created by microorganism’s use of nitrogen to decompose the woody material . The shavings are approximately 3/4” with some sawdust. Nitrolized Redwood Shavings decompose at a slower rate than shavings derived from soft woods such as Fir or Pine. When incorporated into soil, Nitrolized Redwood Shavings improve soil structure, tilth, increases nutrient holding capacity of sandy soils, and improves water drainage.

0-1/4" Plain Fir Bark

0-1/4" Plain Fir Bark is untreated bark fines derived from the bark off of Fir or Pine Trees. The bark stripped from the trees are approximately 3/4” with some sawdust. 0-1/4" Plain Fir Bark, when incorporated into soil, improves soil structure, tilth, increases nutrient holding capacity of sandy soils, and improves water drainage. 0-1/4" Plain Fir Bark also has a slower decomposition rate than shavings derived from soft woods such as Fir or Pine. Soil microorganisms require nitrogen to break down woody material. To prevent a nitrogen depletion from the soil during the decomposition of the wood products, a nitrogen fertilizer should be applied.

Coir

Coir, also known as coconut dust or Coco “Peat” is a by product from the harvesting of coconuts in Southeastern Asia. The long fibers from the husks are used for mats, furniture padding, ropes, & brooms. The short fibers, once considered a waste product, have proven very beneficial in horticulture and provide a sustainable alternative to peat moss. Coir holds moisture well, wets easy, decomposes slow and drains well.

Peat Moss

Peat Moss is the decomposed remains of Sphagnum Moss, a plant native to many regions of the world. Peat Moss is a natural, organic soil conditioner that helps aid in moisture retention and helps regulate air around plant roots for ideal growing conditions. Peat Moss can retain up to 20 times its weight in moisture while releasing water slowly as plants need it. Peat Moss helps loosen and aerate soil that are high in clay. For soils that are high in Alkaline, Peat Moss will help lower the pH as it is naturally acidic. Peat Moss also helps reduce leaching or runoff of nutrients when added to soil. For many gardeners, Peat Moss is a great organic matter for gardening.
